Customized clinical training for speech-language pathologists

Dr. Katrina Miller's Dr. Miller’s commitment to communication empowerment spans 25 plus years and has improved the lives of countless patient, as well as the over 300 novice speech-language pathologists she has trained. As a college professor, Dr. Miller founded the Neurogenic Aphasia Group affectionately referred to as “NAG”, to provide group speech therapy to Durham residents living with aphasia as the result of strokes or traumatic brain injuries. This program also provided graduate level speech-language pathology students the opportunity to be trained and educated in the area of adult neurogenic disorders.

A highly sought national and international speaker and teacher, Dr. Miller recently spent time in China where she created a summer program for Chinese children with communication disorders. As a Clinical Educator of a nationally recognized University clinic, Dr. Miller continues to teach and train young professionals across diverse backgrounds and considers it part of her life’s mission to fully contribute to the fields of education and speech pathology. Dr. Miller has training and expertise in education and clinical supervision. She also has experience counseling persons with communication disorders and mentoring young professionals. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, live music, and exploring new places.

Therapy approaches for young adult clients

This course will provide an intermediate level of instruction for speech-language pathologists, and clinical educators who provide therapy services to high school students and young adults who may have suffered neurogenic events or present with learning disabilities. This course will provide therapy approaches and activities to address clients with aphasia and/or cognitive deficits in high school students and young adults.

Objectives/learner outcomes: Participants will be able to...

  • List the unique needs/characteristics of high school students and young adults with communication impairments
  • Identify methods to incorporate high school curriculum into executive function activities
  • Incorporate a variety of therapy activities that are appropriate for young adults

Multicultural versus Transcultural:  A model of cultural sensitivity in a university program or clinical setting

This course will provide an intermediate level of instruction for speech-language pathologists, university personnel and educators developing university or private clinics. As the racial and ethnic demographics of our country changes, university communication disorders program must adjust curriculum and instruction to meet the demands of their students and future clients. Understanding how culture plays a role in educating and training future practitioners is paramount. Traditional methods of instruction and approaches have not always proven to be the most effective methods. This course will present ways in which university programs can address multicultural and transcultural instruction by providing an example of programs incorporating a variety of methods.

  • List strategies that can assist speech-language pathologists to increase their cultural sensitivity.
  • Identify methods to incorporate multicultural and transcultural instruction and training in a Communication Disorders program/clinic.
  • Define terms associated with multiculturalism

Multicultural Issues in Clinical Practicum and Supervision

This course will provide an intermediate level of instruction for speech-language pathologists that addresses critical issues in clinical practicum and supervision. This course will review the history and theories of supervision in the field of communication disorders in addition to issues that may arise in the supervision of students, clinical fellows and speech therapy assistants. This course will also assist professionals in developing effective skills for supervision in culturally diverse settings. *Course can be adapted for health care professionals including speech-language pathologists, physical therapists and occupational therapists.

  • Provide an overview of the history and theories of supervision in communication disorders
  • Identify characteristics of an effective clinical supervisor 
  • Utilize intercultural communication techniques and skills for working in a culturally diverse workplace
