John W. McCarthy, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an Associate Professor and the Associate Director of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Ohio University. He teaches courses on AAC, inter professional education, CSD pedagogy, language development, and introduction to communication disorders. His research interests include developing AAC interfaces and expanding the creative possibilities for children and young adults with complex communication needs. Dr. McCarthy experience as a school-based SLP, along with a background in voice performance, have been major influences in his career. He is a co-editor of the web-based and DVD resource titled Augmentative and Alternative Communication: An Interactive Clinical Casebook (Plural Publishing).

Intervention
Major intervention approaches for children requiring AAC. The emphasis is on review of methods with illustrations of technology and case examples. Techniques in working with children with a variety of disorders using no-tech, low-tech and high-tech tools are reviewed. General discussions are in the context of beginning communication, to symbolic skills, to combinations of concepts. Modeling interventions in particular are highlighted with recommendations for implementation across a variety of environments and partners. Links to a variety of assessment measures in terms of informing intervention are discussed. Throughout, potential apps, speech-generating devices, and accessibility considerations in using different solutions are noted.
Alternative Access
Focus is on scanning, technology for scanning with illustrations using a variety of mobile-based and dedicated AAC systems. Techniques to teach scanning and decision-making relative to scanning are reviewed.
Interprofessional Education
Focus is on classroom tools to promote interprofessional education with an emphasis on project based learning and collaborative technology tools.
