Kathleen Scaler Scott, PhD, CCC-SLP Kathleen Scaler Scott, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Monmouth University and a Board-Certified Specialist in Fluency Disorders. She has been a practicing clinician for 20 years in hospital, school, and private practice settings. Dr. Scaler Scott has authored and co-authored several articles and book chapters on the topic of fluency disorders. She is co-editor of the textbook, Cluttering: A handbook of research, intervention, and education, and of the treatment manual Managing Cluttering: A comprehensive guidebook of activities, both with Dr. David Ward. Her current research projects include exploration of language and fluency patterns in autism spectrum disorders, and examination of working memory in cluttering. She has presented numerous papers nationally and internationally in the areas of fluency disorders and social communication disorders.

Cluttering and Other Fluency Disorders

 

Managing cluttering in the school-age child: From diagnosis to carryover

This session will begin by discussing the current working definition of cluttering. Next the basics of assessment and differential diagnosis of cluttering from other communication disorders will be covered. Strategies for teasing out symptoms to achieve differential diagnosis, and planning and goal writing for appropriate targets of root fluency issues will be discussed. A problem-solving based approach to accurately pinpointing fluency concerns, testing hypotheses in various settings and over time, will be presented.
Treatment principles will be outlined, and will include strategies for managing cluttering with concomitant disorders, successful carryover techniques, and ways to motivate clients who lack awareness of cluttering. Specific approaches to treating multiple fluency disorders in the same client will be discussed.

 

Managing complex cases in fluency: Cluttering, atypical disfluencies, stuttering

This seminar will begin with a discussion of the challenges of managing fluency disorders in clients of all ages. Definitions of overt vs. covert stuttering, avoidance/escape behaviors, cluttering, and atypical disfluencies will be presented. Strategies for teasing out symptoms to achieve differential diagnosis, and planning for appropriate targets of root fluency issues will be discussed.
A problem-solving based approach to accurately pinpointing fluency concerns, testing hypotheses in various settings and over time, will be presented. Specific approaches to treating multiple fluency disorders to in the same client and/or treating fluency concerns with concomitant disorders will be discussed.

 

Literacy and Social Skills Development

Strategies for effective interventions for older students: Addressing the connection between processing, literacy and social skill development

This session will begin by discussing the some of the challenges surrounding working with middle and high school students. Principles for understanding the interaction between auditory processing, language-based learning disabilities, literacy issues, executive functioning, and social skills will be presented. Issues discussed will include aligning therapy activities with class curriculum while maintaining motivation in these later school years.

Functional treatment strategies to address difficulties with auditory processing, literacy, and social skills will be presented.
